lone firefly
adrift in warm
dark breeze

silent lightning

lake and sky
flash and fade
flash and fade

mosquitoes whining on
window screen

wheels crunch gravel
door slams
dog barks

mourning doves lament

perseids a’ showerin’
dipper a’ dippin’
crickets a’ crickin’:

SETTLING INTO SAMADHI

settling into samadhi
on chopping block under sheltering pines:
red green chain saw off in the hills

PARTRIDGE EXPLODES

partridge explodes
from autumn underbrush:
heart leaps

yellow dog:
silent sentinel on
hill of brown earth

BIG DIPPER

big dipper
recumbent in
black north sky

swing ax:
pings of kindling
split from sweet cedar shake

SCRAPPING MONKS IN A ZENDO

scrapping monks in a zendo
slapping and kicking their way
to enlightenment

LOVE AND MARRIAGE

early symbiosis
morphs into tense alliance

RED & WHITE (TWO-TONE)

red & white (two-tone) ’57 Ford with fender skirts
give thumbs up to driver; feel choked-up emotion
like seeing an old friend after too many years

AS SENSELESSLY ICONOCLASTIC AS

as senselessly iconoclastic as
a lone woman with a fez and a bullhorn
preaching Islam at indifferent pedestrians
corner of Markham and Eglinton

OBSERVATION

I was a boy high in a tree
when they brought the news
that Aunt Mamie had died
